Bolo Rei

Founded in 1829 by Baltazar Ruiz Castanheiro, Confeitaria Nacional has been owned by the same family for five generations and has earned recognition in various international exhibitions both for its traditional Portuguese desserts and its culinary innovation.

One of these innovations was the introduction of the “Bolo Rei” (the kings’ cake), which is usually associated with Christmas, brought to Portugal by the son of the founder during the mid-nineteenth century.

Balthazar Ruiz Castanheiro’s family is proud to be the only ones in possession of Bolo-Rei recipe in Portugal, as well as being the owners of this second to none confectionery. Since its foundation, the Bolo-Rei ingredients selection criterion has been exactly the same.

Its French décor, its beautiful views of Praça da Figueira, which is one of the most emblematic squares in the city, and its quality products make Confeitaria Nacional a place that you don’t want to miss.

Specialties

The almond cookies from Confeitaria Nacional are simply the best you can find anywhere in Lisbon. Other of their specialties include: Almondados, Macarroes da Holanda and Saint-Emillion. The recipes of these specialties were brought to Portugal by one of the bakers’ son: Baltazar Rodrigues Castanheiro around 1800.

Praça da Figueira is the witness to the sensuality of Confeitaria Nacional’s quality products, which are always made with the best ingredients available in the market.

A traditional confectionery

The egg confectionery traditions of Confeitaria Nacional have been gradually disappearing with the passage of time, even before the foundation of this ancient Teahouse. However, some of these ancient recipes are still being produced like lampreas, brown glazes or egg drops, whose recipes were inspired by the sweet egg desserts made at Lisbon convents and specially at Vila Real monastery, which is located in Tras-os-Montes, where Baltazar R. Castanheiro comes from.

Cookies produced at Confeitaria Nacional are made with the finest ingredients available in the market. The raivas, which became famous thanks to the theatrical comedy Gervasio Lobato, the almond bread and the cookies are the most famous products of this confectionery. Long time ago, these products were consumed according to the liturgical calendar. They were eaten during the “skinny” days, i.e. on days of abstinence, as they were done did with rudimentary ingredients. Today, they are just a great accompaniment to a hot chocolate or tea.

A cup of tea, hot chocolate or a refreshing fruit smoothie accompanied by a finely toasted crepe with vanilla ice cream or any other of the many traditional specialties of Confeitaria Nacional can make the teatime truly memorable. Don’t forget trying the Rolha soaked in rum and the Austrian cake made with orange flowers.

During the lunchtime, Confeitaria Nacional is a distinguished restaurant that serves great food and selected wines; it is considered one of the best places for lunch downtown Lisbon.
